` Heinkel 111z ´
A five engined, twin fuselaged, six wheeled Heinkel 111 Zwilling.

Heinkel 111
Two fuselages. but not enough to build two 111s To state the obvious,
the He111z has two fuselages.
The interior was painted with humbrol 92. 86, 30 and 127 were painted around the exterior of the appropriate windows, before fitting the glazing, then glueing the fuselage halves together.
Radiator ...... Radiator painted flat black with light grey.
Both sides of the radiator should be painted before wing assembly..

part of centre chord with radiators in place
Port, centre chord and starboard wings Wings fitted nicely, only a light finishing sanding was required around the seams.

Five Engines - propeller blades painted humbrol 91 Filler in need of a final sanding. The first real hurdle. While the centre wing fits cleanly to the fuselages, the port and starboard wings fit cleanly along the top, but don't on the underside. I used a bit of filler to try and smooth out the problem.
I used Tamiya putty, which should be left at least 48 hours to shrink, before any sanding or finishing.
The model is now taking the familiar shape..Glazing undercoated with rlm grey...Starting on the undercarriage..
The rest is straight forward and event free.
Special care should be taken not to mix up undercarriage parts.
The assemblys are properly angled to sit perpindicular with the ground. NOT the wings.
Tail gun - This part is very small.Close up of towing attachment point on wing
The towing cable connectors do not appear on the central wing.
The two tail guns included for other versions of the Heinkel 111, can be utilised as the towing cable connections on the centre wing, by removing the gun barrels..
begining the paint work

The bulk of the glazing is left off until painting is finished.
Some bits of glazing had a nice fit, others were not so nice.
Very minor amounts of filler smoothed over the joins.
microflat varnish applied .
Once painting and most of the glazing was finished, a coat of water based Microflat varnish was applied and allowed to dry overnight, before application of the decals could begin.
Decals applied to heinkel 111z
The Balkenkreuz went on without a problem, but the lettering ended up silvering over the greens of the upper camouflage.
So I whipped out the paint brush and painted over the silvered areas.
A final finishing of microflat improved the appearance.

Heinkel 111z TH+ZI
The Heinkel 111z was purpose adapted from two existing 111 aircraft, to tow the Messerschmitt 321 Gigant gliders.
The 111z was also capable of towing two or three of the smaller Gotha 242 gliders.
* At the time of this review, this particular kit no longer appears in the Italeri inventory.

* Having just seen a 2005 Italeri catalogue, the He 111z has possibly been released again.
Although at first no sign of it was found on their website.
It did eventually appear. Like many kits now, they tend to vanish and turn up again.

Another Italeri heinkel kit now discontinued - the H20/H22
Italeri still put out an early Heinkel 111H
and until recently a Heinkel 111H20/H22 kit [pictured above].
