Focke-wulf 1000³ B / Fw 239 B
This is not an instructional HOW TO review. Scratch builds are constructed according to personal preference. This is merely something that may be of interest or suggest possibilties.
This is a learning prototype for a larger scale FW 1000x1000x1000B model that I may build in future.

This may have carried the designation FW239B

This is built out of cardboard from a food packet, a few little bits of Balsa wood, a cover from a pad of paper and a bit of plastic blister package.
Essentially it is predominantly built out of stuff that usually gets thrown away.

The first part of construction was to print out a three view drawing which came from the Luft46 website. The image was printed as large as I could, and turned out to be only a few millimetres off of 1/72nd scale.

1. 2. 3.
  1. The core of the centre wing and spars, which the paper will be folded around.
  2. Much later, the cenre wing and outer wings attached with filler smoothing the joins.
  3. Where the engines emerge from the wings.
The physical construction started with the centre wing section, this was made from cross sections and a main spar, since this was only cardboard, it needed a bit of strengthening. A simpler skeleton was made for each outer wing.

The paper That forms the surface is about 150 to 180 gsm weight, it was the cover off a pad of paper, painted black both sides, this ensures that there is little or no expansion and warping from future painting. It also ensures the finished model doesn't become translucent under bright lighting.

Then it was a matter of drawing and cutting a shape that would fold around the skeleton parts. Glueing it on was a process of first glueing it to the underside, then when that is dry, folding it over the top side and glueing it. This required pins and clothes pegs to hold it together while it dried. When dried, it was trimmed with scissors.

The three wing parts were assembled.
To smooth over the joins and overlaps, I used some Micro-Fill.

The rear of the engines are cardboard. The cones out the back are plastic sprue that has been shaped with a pencil sharpener. Where the engines enter the wing is made from paper, which can surprisingly form nice curved shapes.

1. 2. 3.
  1. The tips of the wings or tails, at this point the shape of the Fw 1000x1000x1000B is appearing.
  2. First part of the balsa nose section as the glue dries. The aircraft's shape becomes more familiar.
  3. The cockpit is well glazed, so it needs quite a bit of improvised detail.
The wing tip tails were easy to shape fold and glue into a realistic three dimensional shape. A little scrap end of cardboard went inside each one to ensure they were not squezzed flat during attachment to the wings.

The nose section is cut, carved and sanded out of balsa wood.

The only kit part used is the pilot figure.

1. 2. 3.
  1. Glazing applied and framework painted on in RLM02. The overall colour is light blue at the moment.
  2. Upper camouflage is a dark green. Yellow recognition stripes are on for effect rather than technical accuracy.
  3. Green goes over the grey framework. This aircraft turns out to be ideal for detailed cockpits.
The glazing was cut out of a bit of blister packaging for a marker pen.
The packaging had just the right curves. The framework was painted on.

Finally reaching the painting stage. Only a few minor details need to be added.

1. 2. 3.
  1. Pitot tube added.
  2. Radio aerial.
  3. Camouflage and Balkenkruz added.
The camouflage is as always with Luft'46 projects, what you think looks right
Balkenkruz were hand painted, although they always end up looking a bit wonky whenever I do that. But overall the aircraft is a pleasing shape and potentially could be more detailed. It looked nice on a video test during painting.
